Just three kilometers from Vižinada lies one of the most beautifully preserved structures of the former narrow-gauge railway Parenzana – the Sabadin Viaduct. Today, this impressive monument of industrial heritage connects past and present: once a busy railway point, it is now a popular destination for cyclists, hikers, and nature lovers exploring the route of the former railway.

The impressive Sabadin Viaduct, built in the early 20th century, is now a must-see stop along the walking and cycling trails that follow the former Parenzana route. Its elegant stone structure blends technical heritage with untouched nature, offering visitors a unique experience of Istria from a different perspective.

The Sabadin Viaduct, 20 meters high and 64 meters long, was constructed in 1902 as part of the Parenzana narrow-gauge railway, which from 1902 to 1935 connected Poreč with Trieste and served as an important transport lifeline for passengers and goods between the coastal and inland parts of Istria.

The bridge is located about 3 km southeast of Vižinada and consists of four elegant stone arches that span the valley of the Sabadin stream – a seasonal watercourse that flows into the Mirna River during rainy periods. From its top, visitors can enjoy enchanting views of the surrounding hills, vineyards, olive groves, and forests.

The viaduct was restored as part of the European project “Parenzana – The Route of Health and Friendship,” which aimed to revitalize the old railway line and transform it into a cultural and recreational route connecting Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The project was funded by the European Union and local communities.

Today, Sabadin is more than just a bridge – it is a symbol of the connection between past and present. Along with tunnels, other viaducts, rest areas, and informational points, it forms an important part of the cultural and tourist infrastructure that promotes sustainable tourism and allows visitors to experience the peace, beauty, and history of the Istrian hinterland.
