Art Gallery Ante Potočnjak

Born in Rijeka in 1955, Ante Potočnjak lives and works in the nearby town of Kastav. His artistic journey began in the 1970s under the guidance of professor Aleksandar Virag, who introduced him to the fundamentals of painting. He became active within the “Čakavska scena” cultural circle and founded the art group “Friends of the Sea,” a collective of young, unconventional artists working outside mainstream trends.

Early exhibitions followed in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, the Governor’s Palace, and the Jugolinija Club. By the late 1980s, Potočnjak had expanded into interior design, focusing on public spaces and vessels. He was responsible for the reconstruction and design of Opatija’s City Hall and the City Cinema Opatija. Among his most notable works are the luxurious interiors of the presidential yacht “Al Farah” for Muammar Gaddafi and the vessel “Učka” once owned by Josip Broz Tito.

Alongside his painting practice, he collaborated with Croatian theatres on more than 20 productions, contributing to set and costume design. For the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka, he developed the full costume color scheme for Puccini’s Turandot. He is also engaged in community-focused projects, including art programs in hospitals and initiatives to support the local alternative art scene.

Potočnjak has exhibited widely in Croatia and Italy, including a major retrospective in Trieste in 2002 under the patronage of Matica hrvatska and officers’ associations, as well as solo exhibitions in Pula, Crikvenica, Zagreb, Krk, and beyond. He is the founder of the first art workshop in Kastav and the Summer Art Workshop on the island of Krapanj.

The Potočnjak Gallery in Vižinada functions as both a permanent and seasonal exhibition space, offering visitors a chance to explore his artworks – from abstract compositions to landscapes and figurative pieces, created in oil, acrylic, and giclée techniques. His artistic language is marked by Mediterranean ambiance and poetic undertones.

As a valuable cultural venue in Vižinada, the gallery fosters connections between the artist and both locals and visitors, enriching the regional art scene with thematic and seasonal exhibitions.
