Interpretation Centre – Fisherman’s House
The Fisherman’s House is a place where you can gain a deeper understanding of the life of local fishermen, fishing methods for fish, shellfish and octopus, as well as learn about their daily habits and how they spent their leisure time. The interactive exhibition, numerous fishing tools and objects highlight fishing as one of the most important activities in Tar and Vabriga.
The Santa Marina Fisherman’s House is an interpretation centre dedicated to the fishing heritage of Tar and Vabriga, located in a restored fishermen’s house next to the new fishing harbour in Santa Marina. In this place, where fishing has been continuously developed for more than a century, the memory of generations of local fishermen and a life shaped by the sea for centuries is preserved.
The centre tells the story of the development of fishing in this area, from the first fishing families and stone sheds for nets and boats, through fishing cooperatives, to the modern life of the harbour. Special attention is given to both tangible and intangible heritage: the everyday life of fishermen, their hard work, family stories and knowledge passed down through generations.
Visitors also have access to the Al Penon restaurant, specialised in authentic Istrian cuisine prepared from local ingredients and the daily catch of local fishermen.
The Santa Marina Fisherman’s House is designed as a small museum and meeting place, a space shared equally by the local community and visitors. Through interpretation, education and workshops for all ages, the centre presents fishing culture in an educational, interactive and accessible way, creating a new experience that enriches a stay on the Poreč Riviera. In addition to contributing to the preservation of the identity of the Tar-Vabriga municipality, the Fisherman’s House also represents a new cultural and tourist point, connecting the sea, tradition and a contemporary experience in the authentic setting of Santa Marina.
