Hiking Trail Two Mills
The starting point of this circular hiking trail is located in the very centre of Kaštelir. The first 400 m pass through the village and lead towards the football pitch. Immediately next to the pitch, the trail turns right onto a wide gravel road, surrounded by picturesque vineyards and olive groves.
After 2 km, the trail passes under the Istrian Y motorway underpass, after which we turn left. Along this section of the walk, we enjoy a beautiful view of the large bridge, which, as part of the motorway, connects the elevated plateaus above the valley of Istria’s largest and longest river, the Mirna.
After 3 km, the trail turns right and then leads us steeply downhill. At the bottom, we are greeted by a small bridge over the old riverbed of the Mirna. Nearby are two old mills, after which the trail got its name.
The Mirna River is 53 km long, and its course includes several enchanting tributaries and waterfalls. The middle section flows towards the Motovun Forest, a famous site of magnificent Istrian truffles. The Mirna continues through the valley that stretches before you, passes under the bridge and flows into the Adriatic Sea near the settlement of Antenal, close to the town of Novigrad. Looking into the valley, you can notice channels that provide local farmers with irrigation water and also help prevent flooding.
With a bit of adrenaline when crossing the small bridge, the trail turns right and leads us for another 3 km along the riverbed. We pass a hunting stand and another small bridge until reaching a slightly larger bridge. Here, a wide gravel road appears, leading back uphill to the base of the paragliding take-off site. Over these 2 km, we climb to almost 200 metres above sea level. The trail passes a large solar power plant, after which we again reach the Istrian Y underpass. Shortly after the underpass, we arrive at a three-way junction. Our trail continues along the middle path, and following wide gravel roads we follow the signs to Valentići (Kaštelir/Labinci), passing by the well-known Žardin restaurant. A pleasant asphalt road through the settlement leads us back to the starting point in the centre of Kaštelir, where this circular trail ends.
